50% Teens Suffer Date Violence

It is often thought that men are aggressors in the relationship. News about domestic violence is often on the husband physically dominating their partners.

There are still women who are more violent at home, but they are very rare.

The violence in men is considered to be more frequent because they always use force to insist on their preferences. Some are even too aggressive that could lead to domestic violence to the point of fatal consequences.

But a new study shows that violence is not necessarily on the male gender alone. In fact, a study about dating behavior of high school students reveals that both sexes could be violent.

This study was revealed at “Victimization of Children and Youth: an International Research Conference” and the study was conducted by the UA Department of Psychology.

It’s a highly unique study because it used high school students as their point of study. This study is rarely conducted and the reports on the study was never fully explored and explained.

The study was based on 175 students in high school. The researchers focused on asking the students about their dating behavior and experience in violence.

Based on the study, nearly 30% of the students in each gender have experienced violence. This means 60% of the group has experienced violence in their relationship.

But the study also reveals that those who have experienced violence have also caused the same amount of violence to their dating partners. Gender wasn’t even a factor – high school male and female have been violent in their relationship.

The researchers have suggested a theory about the same level of violence in both sexes.

High school female students have also become violent in the relationship as much as high school male students because of their increasing comfort in the relationship.

Their assertiveness has also increased their aggression especially if they see any threat in their relationship.

This study is highly unique as well as important. The study in the behavior of high school students in their relationship points to possible trend in the future.

Many high school students experience their first intimate relationship in high school. Their experience of aggression can be carried on when they reach college and when they reach adulthood.

The fact that more than half of the high school students are physically aggressive points to a dangerous situation.

The study of aggression in dating among high school students is not yet a complete study since it’s only conducted in less than 200 students.

However, the early results of the study should be clue for educators, parents and the community. Further knowledge of the high school student’s dating behavior is required and intervention on relationship should be conducted on students as soon as possible.

The lessons learned about dating during high school could become a trend until their adulthood which can cause dangerous, if not fatal, relationships.

If intervention or education is implemented to prevent violence, then the future relationships of the high school students will not have the same level of violence.
