Anti-Gay Slurs Damage Heterosexuals As Well

Name calling in schools is very common. Almost anyone at school would eventually have a nickname that they will eventually use for the rest of their lives.

Some nicknames are amusing, some are a bit annoying but while other are unfortunately, degrading.

Name calling that uses anti-gay slurs for adolescents happens.

While this stage of life can be shaken off by those who become successful once they become adults; there are those who could be gravely affected by the gay slurs.

It doesn’t even matter if they are actually gay since the name will have an emotional effect.

The emotional effect of anti-gay slurs is often the degradation of self esteem. Depression and even stress at school could be experienced by those who are called with anti-gay slurs.

This name calling will prevent them from being active at school or prohibit themselves from doing any activities that might cause them attention. They fear that they will be called with more anti-gay slurs if they attract attention.

With low self-esteem the chances of excellence is very low and the trend might continue when they become adults.

Anti-gay slurs at school are not only limited to the adolescent male. Some females are also subjected to anti-gay slurs because of their behavior.

But even though adolescent female is also subjected to this type of slurs, the emotional response is different compared to adolescent male who experiences the same slurs.

Although young women who experience anti-gay slurs will never experience any self-esteem problem, they would often end up being more withdrawn from various groups and activities. They would prefer to be alone rather than being with a group that might taunt them with anti-gay slurs.

Withdrawing from groups will not even be limited in school but even in community activities.

The effects of anti-gay slurs are different in sexes and the causes of these slurs are also different. For the young men, name calling is used to establish hierarchy. Sure, the person subjected to name calling can still be part of the group but he can never be the leader because someone has degraded him through anti-gay slurs.

For adolescent females, slurs are often directed to those they do not want to be part of the group. Anti-gay slurs for women are often used to exclude some persons from various activities in school and even in the community.

Because of the drastic effects of name calling for young men and women, it’s important for the school administrators and teachers to diffuse this type of abuse of students. Although they are only verbal, the emotional effect of these slurs could haunt the memory of the individual forever.

Anti-gay slurs don’t even have to be true as these words will always be degrading. Unfortunately, many schools are not keen in stomping this practice of name calling.

Students who experience this problem should not be afraid in approaching their teachers and administrators so that derogatory anti-gay slurs will be stopped once and for all.
