Anti-Gay Bullying Widespread In U.S. Schools

Calling someone with derogatory remarks based on the perceived sexual preference is a bad practice. It’s often frowned by everyone who hears the accusation as they are very degrading and disrespectful.

There are even companies who mandate seminars to those who used these terms or were even terminated by using a derogatory remark.

Unfortunately, this practice is still widespread in schools. Kids who are perceived to be gay are often taunted with these remarks. These remarks can easily traumatize the individual which will not only affect his or her performance in school but also in adulthood.

A research presented at American Educational Research Association provides an alarming number of the practice of the use of various derogatory remarks.

According to the research, more than 80% of those with different sexual orientation are continuously experiencing derogatory remarks. Nearly 40% were physically harmed which prompts fear of the students. More than 60% of the group does not feel safe when they are at school.

The fear, humiliation and physical assault can’t just affect the kid for a few years. The pain will most likely last forever if these feelings are not treated well. Worst, it might even lead to abnormal behavior when they reach adulthood.

The high rate of verbal abuse of those with different sexual orientation also reveals another alarming fact. More than 80% of the group failed to see any intervention or protection from their teachers. Many ignore these taunts to their students as if nothing is happening.

A proof of the inability of the educators to put a stop on the taunts was the three separate lawsuits made by students on the school.

These three students opted to sue the school because they did not provide any protection to these kids that were taunted. Two of the three cases won. This basically shows that educators are not doing their job in protecting the children from this traumatic situation.

This study should push the educators to do more than just look at the situation. They need to act fast in order to protect kids from this type of abuse.

They are never amusing and they are only done at the expense of the individual who may not experience normal adolescent life because of the taunting.
Unfortunately, the law is not working as fast as possible to protect the kids.

As of this writing, there are only 10 states in the country that provides legal protection to those with different sexual orientation. There are discrimination laws implemented in every state but only a few are extending the discrimination to those with different sexual orientation in school.

Parents on the other hand should provide all the emotional and psychological support to their children. They need to provide a listening ear and exercise understanding in the current situation of their adolescent kids.

The adolescent years are very crucial to the kid’s development into adulthood so any protection possible should be extended not only by parents but also by the school administrators as well as the state laws and policies.
