Some schools in the country are practicing condom availability programs. This is a form of program wherein the students have better access to this type of protection.
This was implemented in order to assist adolescents for easy access of condoms so that they will be protected from unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease.
The program may look like a smart idea but this type of program has its share of opposition.
Some even think the presence of condoms could increase sexual activity to students which will slowly increase the effects of unprotected intercourse.
It might be a smart program but the presence of condoms in school might encourage students to be very open about sexual encounter.
But a study recently published refutes the idea that condom availability programs only increase sexual activity among students. According to the study, the ease of access of condom didn’t really change their perception about sex.
Many adolescents are neither excited nor disappointed that condoms are very easy to access. This might even reinforce ideas to students about the dangers of sexual interaction when they are not done without any protection.
The study shows that there are distinct advantages when schools adapt this type of program.
The study of the effects of the availability of condoms was published in American Journal of Public Health.
The research was led by the Department of Prevention and Community Health in Washington, D.C. The researchers focused their studies on a behavioral survey in Massachusetts.
Even though the survey was made in 1995, its relevance especially on the behavior of the adolescents is still acknowledged. The 1995 survey was conducted to more than 4,100 students.
More than 20% of the students who participated in the survey were enrolled in schools that have condom availability programs.
According to the study, there is a positive effect of condom availability in schools. Students that reported they are sexually active in schools with available condoms use condoms more than the students in schools without such a program.
Reports of STDs in schools with condom availability are also down. Based on the survey, 25% of the students from schools with available programs have used condoms. Only 13% Students in schools without this program use condoms during sexual interaction.
What’s surprising is that the sexual activities in schools with available condoms are even smaller although the difference is not that much. This scenario is possible since condoms will remind students about the dangers of unprotected and misuse of condoms.
The main indicator that sexual activity in schools with condom availability is the same with schools without the said program is the pregnancy rate. This means students are still likely to engage in sexual encounter with or without this type of program.
Because of the results, educators are encouraged to offer condoms to their students.
They do not have to actively distribute them. Most schools only make them available to those who request it.
If this type of program is implemented with the right sex education, serious problems caused be unprotected sexual encounter will be prevented.
